4th & 26: For Chargers' Kelley Washington, Future is Now

4th and 26
is here to throw you a couple of deep sleepers, guys available in a large majority of Fleaflicker leagues that could give your fantasy football team a big boost.

Kelley Washington, WR, Chargers (0% owned)
Remember when Kelley Washington was supposed to be "The Future"? Well, that future could be now. The journeyman receiver should see plenty of field time (if activated) in Week 16 with Antonio Gates, Malcom Floyd, and Patrick Crayton sidelined, and we all know as long as Phil Rivers is slinging the orb, all backup Chargers receivers make decent fill-ins (see some of Seyi Arijotutu and Crayton's performances earlier this season).

Maryland tosses Ralph Friedgen overboard. Prepare the ship for the arrival of Captain Leach.

All reports out of College Park today suggest not only that Maryland has asked coach Ralph Friedgen to step aside in the wake of offensive coordinator/coach-in-waiting James Franklin's departure for Vanderbilt, but that Friedgen has verbally agreed to accept a buyout of the final year of his contract, per the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post and other outlets. It's not certain whether he'll coach the Terps in the Military Bowl on Dec. 29, but the consensus is overwhelming that the Fridge will not be back in 2011.

That's a tough break for a tough coach who did as much for his alma mater as any coach since the Terps were a short-lived national power in the early fifties. Friedgen was a part of Maryland's successful run under mentor Bobby Ross in the early eighties, and went on to win a national championship at Georgia Tech (1990) and take the San Diego Chargers to their only Super Bowl (1994) as Ross' offensive coordinator. His first season back in College Park as head coach produced a miraculous ACC championship in 2001; his next two teams combined for 21 wins, back-to-back top-20 finishes and decisive postseason victories in the Peach and Gator bowls in 2002-03.

That start alone was worth a decade of goodwill, at least, and Friedgen has needed it after consecutive 5-6 finishes in 2004-05 and a last-place, 2-10 debacle in 2009 that very nearly cost him his job. He goes out off a solid 8-4 rebound that earned him second ACC Coach of the Year award, but without any of the optimism or momentum that followed the first nine years ago. Attendance is down, recruiting has stagnated and first-year athletic director Kevin Anderson has no inclination to keep a lame duck boss around for the sake of playing out the string.

With Franklin and his $1 million buyout out of the picture, Anderson – who wasn't in charge for the decision to bring Friedgen back for his tenth season or make Franklin his heir apparent – is free to go after his own candidate. And by all accounts – specifically, this one by Chip Brown at Orangebloods.com – that candidate is the Pirate Coach himself, Mike Leach.

The former Texas Tech captain has made no secret of his impatience to get back in the game after a year in exile, and his relationship with Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank – a former Terrapin player and current UMD trustee – made Maryland likely port of call for Leach since Texas Tech set him adrift last year. He can make two guarantees: a) He'll change the culture, and b) He'll put fans in the seats.

The only major obstacle in Leach's path back to the captain's wheel: His personal quest for revenge against the landlubbing scalawags that done him in, i.e. an ongoing lawsuits against Texas Tech, Craig James and ESPN over his controversial ouster from Tech last year. Looming legal issues, amid any other doubts, could conceivably be a deal-breaker. Leach's agent insists he hasn't heard heard from Maryland, or from Maryland boosters.

But with the rumor mill in overdrive and Leach apparently reaching out to certain recruits with word of his impending arrival, it can't hurt to give the red carpet a once-over before he comes aboard.

Spotter's Stand: Carl Edwards Has Offseason Momentum in His Back Pocket

He may have won the two races that dole out the least amount of recognition of the entire season, but Carl Edwards doesn't much care.

"For our team, to finish like this and to be on the upswing that we are, this is as good as it gets," Edwards said after winning Sunday at Homestead, his second in a row.

Of course, Edwards was overshadowed by an incredibly dramatic championship fight that he watched from the outside looking in Sunday, largely in his rear-view mirror.

Jimmie Johnson overcame Denny Hamlin and held off Kevin Harvick to win the 2010 title, and proceeded to spin through a burnout as Edwards celebrated with his traditional backflip.

"I tell you, it's a lot more frustrating to not be in victory lane and watching somebody out there doing their donuts and all that stuff," Edwards said.

Scary moment on WEC 53 preliminary card

Eddie Wineland and Ken Stone had a frightening moment during the preliminary card at WEC 53. From Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, who was cageside:

Stone pulled guard and Wineland walked him across the cage and backed him to the fence. Then, he did a Rampage Japan-style slam and Stone was out cold immediately. Down for 5-10 minutes and then out on a stretcher.

Stone was taken from the arena in a stretcher, but he did not sustain any serious injuries, and was moving and breathing without trouble.

Otherwise, the WEC 53 undercard was called by several on-site media the most exciting undercard they've seen. Only two fights went to the judges cards.

Complete undercard results:

Renan Barao def. Chris Cariaso via submission via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 3:47

Yuri Alcantara def. Ricardo Lamas via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 3:26

Danny Castillo def. Will Kerr via knockout (punches) - Round 1, 1:25

Eddie Wineland def. Ken Stone via knockout (slam) - Round 1, 2:11

Brad Pickett def. Ivan Menjivar via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Shane Roller def. Jamie Varner via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 3:55

Danny Downes def. Tiequan Zhang via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

Pinstripe Bowl Gets Some Weather Issues to Work Around for Inaugural Game

New Yorkers woke to a city blanketed in snow Monday morning, and many believe there's no better place during Christmas and New Year's than New York City for that reason and many others.

Yet, the unpredictable New York weather is already testing the inaugural New York Era Pinstripe Bowl by throwing it a curveball -- or should we say snowball?

While the heaviest December snowfall in six decades left travelers in the Big Apple and the northeast struggling amid waist-high drifts and blinding winds, officials with New Era Pinstripe Bowl quickly regrouped and rescheduled some of the day's events.

Boise State, Utah Leave Las Vegas in Different Directions

LAS VEGAS -- After being invited to join what will be the Pac-12 Conference, Utah was forced to juggle its schedule a bit and canceled a series with Boise State -- prompting cat-calls from Bronco fans desperate to create regional rivalries outside the potato state.

Considering what's happened the last two times the Broncos and Utes have faced off it might make a little sense why Utah replaced BSU with Montana State on next year's slate -- Boise State has outscored Utah, 62-6, counting Wednesday night's 26-3 thumping in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas.

Utah might not be able to hide from the Broncos in future years, though. The Las Vegas Bowl pits the Pac-12 No. 5 team (a distinct possibility for the Utes) against the Mountain West champs -- which BSU figures to challenge for every year.

Still, Boise State will need yet another perfect season to sniff another BCS bowl game.

"It's so unbelievably difficult to win every game," BSU coach Chris Petersen said. "That's why you got to play the game. There are a lot of hurdles to get over."

Utah and Boise State face uncertain futures with plenty of hurdles in front of them.
