• And then there were three. Colorado has reportedly met with Colorado officials about the job earlier this week. Bieniemy and Embree both have longstanding ties to Colorado – both have been assistants in Boulder after their playing days – and either would be the first black head coach in school history. • Not so fast, my friend. Meanwhile, the plot thickens in Miami, where top target Jon Gruden – thought to be on the verge of accepting an offer to replace Randy Shannon as the Hurricanes' head coach on Wednesday – essentially told athletic director Kirby Hocutt "thanks but no thanks" Wednesday during a meeting in Tampa. "[Guden] didn't say yes. He didn't say no," according to a source in the Miami Herald. "But in effect, it's probably a no because it will take months before the NFL jobs come open and UM can't wait that long." An ESPN exec also said Wednesday he expects Gruden to remain in broadcasting at least another year. [Miami Herald]
Miami also missed a chance to chat with one of its top non-Super Bowl-winning candidates when Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen was forced to cancel a recruiting trip to South Florida because of the flu. On the bright side, 'Cane fans, Donald Trump has two words for you. [Clarion-Ledger]
• We love you this much. San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk said Tuesday that an unnamed donor made to keep head coach Brady Hoke from bolting to Minnesota or another more prestigious job. • Who's up? The next coach to come before the tribunal could be Washington State's Paul Wulff, who may be facing a dreaded "win or else" scenario in Saturday's Apple Cup showdown with Washington. Publicly, new athletic director Bill Moos says he hasn't made a decision on Wulff's future. Privately, well, Wulff is 5-31 with two Pac-10 wins in three years. [Seattle Times]
• We got your back, kid. One coach whose athletic director has his back: Rick Neuheisel. Heads could roll on Neuheisel's staff after Saturday's finale against USC, but UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero was emphatic Wednesday when asked if his head coach would be back for a fourth year in 2011: "Of course there’s never been any question of that," Guerrero said. "There's no doubt. Why would you ask that question?" Well, gee, I wonder why. [Orange County Register]

Quickly… Former South Carolina receiver Kenny McKinley was deep in debt before his apparent suicide in September. … Hawaii and Utah State are lobbying the Mountain West to rescue them from the sinking ship that is the WAC. … Arkansas is the latest state considering an anti-agent bill in the legislature. … An ESPN cameraman gets ejected from Bedlam. … A pair of Californians made the harrowing nine-month trek to Alabama, and made it back to tell the tale. … Putting the finishing touches on the Georgia Dome for the SEC Championship Game. … A local elephant is set to pick the Apple Cup. … Nouveau Oregon fans are popping up everywhere. … And another empty trophy case at USC.
