Who's Got Next?: Wesley Matthews or Rudy Fernandez? Pick One

With Brandon Roy out on Tuesday night with a sore knee, Wesley Matthews will get the nod at the starting shooting guard position for the Blazers. While Roy expects to play this Thursday against the Nuggets it only seems like a matter of time before we find him sidelined for weeks, possibly months. No matter how you want to spin his injury, swelling in the knee -- especially his knee -- is nothing to brush off. So while Matthews should see an increase in value at the starting 'two' position, there's still a good chance that Rudy Fernandez will emerge as the more valuable of the two.

Matthews has limited fantasy value. He can score the ball, hit his free throws, and knock down the occasional 3-pointer, but he doesn't play much defense and his assist and rebound numbers are quite underwhelming. Fernandez's ceiling is limited, but he can at least add 1.5 threes and over a steal per game. His FG% is horrible -- 40.6 percent on career -- but he too can shoot in the mid-80s from the free-throw line.

It's a tossup between the two. I would lean toward Fernandez because he's more valuable in the 3-point and steals categories, but Matthews may prove to be just as valuable as the starting 'two.'

My advice is to simply take your pick! You'll likely see a similar return from both.
