The key to winning a points league is simple: draft the best player available. Unlike in standard head-to-head or roto leagues, in a points league you don't chase categories. You're looking to draft based on overall production. For instance, in the case of Dwight Howard you are less likely to take the same hit for his FT% and free-throw attempt deficiencies in a points league as you are in standard H2H and roto leagues.
The default scoring system calls for one point earned for every free-throw made and minus three points for every four free-throw attempts. That would have put Howard at +3.5 points per game based on his 2009-10 numbers -- six free throws made per game on 10 attempts. Imagine that, getting a 'plus' in the free-throw category for drafting Howard!
