"I saw a kid standing there with Hunter Mahan's Presidents Cup caddie bib," he said afterward. "He was carrying around a stick. I thought I'd give him a putter to carry around instead."
Beats his original plan of slinging the offending flat stick, a Ping belly model, into Lake Merced.
Sure enough, Calcaveccia donated the putter and used his 3-wood on the greens for the round's final five holes. And get this, he went one-under over that stretch, carding two birdies and one bogey.
Calc has a longstanding hatred of his putters, having done battle both with and against them most of his career. A few weeks ago, he talked with Golf magazine about flinging putters into canals and off cliffs. When asked of the many fates that befell his unfortunate putters, he responded with vintage Calc:
Well, there's one sitting in a rain gutter at a Residence Inn in Akron, Ohio. I was staying on the second floor and just reached out the window and put it in there. It's not very nice there in the winter. There's one in a flower garden in Westchester [N.Y.]. There are several in the ocean. I've given more away to kids than I've broken, but sometimes it just feels good to break one.
