Rome derby deemed too crazy for Lazio's eagle

This weekend's Rome derby will already be without Francesco Totti, and now Lazio will be missing a fan favorite of its own.

Since Lazio bought a real, live American eagle named Olimpia over the summer, the club has gone on an incredible run, topping the Serie A table and going undefeated at home. But with the rage and chaos the Rome derby usually features, authorities are worried that it would all be too much for Olimpia to do her usual three laps around the pitch before the match.

From Football Italia:

The local authority feels it would be a risk to public order and that Olimpia could get distressed in such a hostile environment where flares and paper bombs are often let off.

It's a blow to Lazio who now consider Olimpia to be a good luck charm seeing as her arrival has coincided with the club topping the table in Serie A.

Also, I should point out that there is no truth to the rumor I just made up that this careful protection of Olimpia stems from when Rino Gattuso tried to eat her when Milan played Lazio in September.
