Status Updates - quick hitters from around the league
• Brandon Bass returned to action on Sunday after missing six games with a sprained left ankle. Bass came off the bench behind Ryan Anderson and it is unclear if he will move back into the starting unit or continue to spell Anderson off the bench going forward. Anderson has played extremely well in Bass’ absence, which should make Stan Van Gundy’s decision more difficult.
• Michael Beasley’s troublesome ankle is pain-free but the true test will come on Sunday when he tests his ankle in practice. Consider Beasley a game-time decision for Monday.
• Finally, it appears that Rodrigue Beaubois will make his season debut for the Dallas Mavericks. Beaubois is currently targeting Wednesday’s game against the Sacramento Kings for his return to action. He has been participating in Dallas’ practice but is struggling with cutting after running full-speed. It will take some time for Beaubois to work himself back into game shape, plus he now has to compete with Jason Terry, J.J. Barea, Peja Stojakovic and DeShawn Stevenson for minutes.
• Marcus Camby is getting closer to returning to action but still has some residual pain in his knee. Camby’s pain occurs when he decelerates after running. At this point, it is hard to imagine Camby returning prior to the All-Star Break.
• DeMarcus Cousins continued to provide more evidence of the immaturity issues that caused him to slip to fifth overall on draft day, as he was suspended by Sacramento for getting into a physical confrontation with teammate Donte Greene in the Kings’ locker room on Saturday night. It is unclear at this point if Cousins will miss any additional time as a result of the latest incident.
• Kevin Durant is a game-time decision for Sunday’s matchup with the Golden State Warriors after twisting his ankle Saturday night against the Sacramento Kings. Durant injured his ankle in the third quarter but was able to play through the pain and finish out the game, which is a pretty good indication that the injury is not serious.
• According to head coach Jay Triano, Reggie Evans still has not participated in full contact practices and will remain sidelined through the All-Star Break. With how well Amir Johnson is playing lately, it is difficult to predict what Evans’ role will be when he does return to action so he should be left on waiver wires outside of deep leagues.
• Eric Gordon’s injured wrist will likely keep him out until after the All-Star Break, which means Randy Foye gets a couple more games of big minutes.
• Richard Hamilton’s latest injury is listed as a sore groin, which kept him out of Friday’s game. Hamilton will not have any value until he is traded to another team who will give Rip a steady role, as John Kuester appears unwilling to give Hamilton any role at all.
• Jonas Jerebko has been gradually ratcheting up his involvement during Pistons’ practices lately and has been cleared to do everything except run fast, change direction at a high velocity or jump. Jerebko plans on returning to action this season but remains a ways away, as his calf muscle on right leg is only at 65 to 70 percent strength.
• Amir Johnson is questionable for Sunday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Clippers with a sprained right ankle. Rookie Ed Davis would likely get extra run if Johnson is unable to go.
• Chris Kaman is unlikely to return to action before the All-Star Break, as he deals with lingering ankle issues that have forced him to miss the majority of the season. DeAndre Jordan will continue to start until Kaman returns.
• X-Rays on Andrei Kirilenko’s sprained ankle came back negative, which puts his status in doubt for Tuesday’s rematch against the Phoenix Suns. AK did not participate in Saturday’s practice. C.J. Miles would likely get a boost if Kirilenko misses any games with the injury.
• The news regarding Rashard Lewis’s right knee tendinitis has been getting progressively worse and worse. Lewis has been playing through the pain, but at some point the Wizards will realize that they have nothing to play for and may decide to shut Lewis down. Lewis has stated that he will need surgery at some point, and is hoping to be able to postpone it until after the season ends. However, should his condition worsen any more, expect Lewis to go under the knife before the end of the season. Move Lewis if you can get anything close to equal value in return.
• Corey Maggette left Saturday night’s game against the Pacers in the first quarter with a back injury. It is unclear how much, if any, time Maggette will miss with the injury. Look for Carlos Delfino to step up in Maggette’s absence.
• O.J. Mayo is eligible to return from his ten-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy on February 15th versus the Philadelphia 76’ers.
• Darko Milicic remains day-to-day with a sore hip. Nikola Pekovic got the start in Milicic’s absence and looks like a decent plug-and-play option in deep leagues should Darko continue to sit out games.
• Joakim Noah is hoping to return on February 23rd from hand surgery to repair a torn ligament in his hand against the Toronto Raptors. Noah still has not been cleared for full contact practices or live scrimmaging, which will be the next step for Joakim. Noah has maintained a high level of conditioning throughout the rehab process so should be able to work his way back into playing over 36 minutes a night relatively quickly.
• Emeka Okafor remains sidelined with a strained oblique. Okafor has missed New Orleans’ past seven games with the injury. Okafor will likely be sidelined until after the All-Star Break.
• Shaquille O’Neal was seen in a walking boot on his right foot as a result of lingering Achilles soreness on Sunday. Kendrick Perkins appears to be in line for all the minutes he can handle due to the injuries affecting Shaq, Jermaine O’Neal and Semih Erden.
• Zach Randolph is expected to start for Sunday’s game against the Denver Nuggets after sitting out Friday’s win over the Milwaukee Bucks with a sprained right ankle.
• The Portland Trail Blazers are committed to bringing Brandon Roy back slowly from dual knee surgeries, which means Roy likely won’t return prior to the All-Star Break. Guard Rudy Fernandez will likely take the biggest hit as a result of Roy’s return to action, as LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews firmly established their roles in Brandon’s absence.
• Amar’e Stoudemire’s sprained right big toe is not expected to force him to miss any additional time. Stoudemire also expects to be available for the NBA All-Star Game on February 20th.
• Delonte West is expected to return to action for Wednesday’s game against New Jersey. West will participate in Boston’s practices on Monday and Tuesday and will be a game-time decision for Wednesday night. West has only appeared in five games this season, as he broke his right wrist shortly after returning from his ten-game suspension that the league imposed at the start of the season.
