The Qatar Masters were really hard on Thursday

While the Waste Management continues to deal with cold weather and frost, the Qatar Masters kicked off across the pond, and if Thursday was any indication, you'd think it was played at Bethpage Black, Qatar.

Yep, 25 mph winds made it nearly impossible to contend on the Doha Golf Club, with just one player (Retief Goosen) breaking 70 in the opening round.

How tough was it? World No. 2, Martin Kaymer, failed to make a birdie, shooting 77, and saying afterward to the Associated Press, "It was difficult but I screwed up in the end. I made a double bogey on the 15th, and I didn't hole any putts today."

Nine players failed to break 80, including Ross Fisher and Johan Edfors.

John Daly tied Kaymer with a 77, two shots better than his closing 79 on Sunday at the Famers Insurance Open, a tough close to a hopeful week for the former major winner.

I think it's worth asking, why is Mother Nature so mad at the game of golf?
