ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- At Ball State, Brady Hoke methodically built a team that went undefeated through the 2008 regular season. At San Diego State, he brought the Aztecs to their first bowl game in more than a decade.
OK, he has proven he can resurrect middling football programs.
Can he restore great ones?
Hoke officially accepted that task Wednesday. Hoke, 52, was hired to fix college football's winningest all-time program, one caught in the worst rut in school history over the past three seasons.
Hoke's courtship with the University of Michigan was a curious one -- he was widely considered a front-runner for the job despite lacking the star-struck credentials as other top-flight candidates.
But big names did not impress Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon.
