No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki will have the chance to avenge her 2009 U.S. Open final loss and claim her first WTA Championships title on Sunday against two-time titlist Kim Clijsters.Wozniacki defeated No. 2-ranked Vera Zvonareva in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, on Saturday in the second semifinal at the WTA Championships to advance into Sunday's final.
It was a fantastic year for Zvonareva, who clinched the year-end No. 2 spot this week in Doha. The 26-year-old Russian finished runner-up at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open this year, but faltered on Saturday, losing nine straight games -- and the match -- after squandering two set points on serve in the first set, while up 5-4.
It was a brief and unfortunate flashback of past years for Zvonareva, who used to be highly susceptible to similar types of mental lapses before her maturation process in 2010. Zvonareva only won four total points of 28 in the entire second set against the 20-year-old Dane on Saturday.
