Magpies supporting judge recuses himself from Nolan speeding trial

Judge Flabbygut says court is now in session.

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan is denying he drove 65 mph in a 35 mph zone, so he's going to trial over it. But finding a judge for this simple matter is apparently more difficult than you might think. From The Mirror:

A judge has refused to try Newcastle United skipper Kevin Nolan – as he’s a loyal Magpies fan.

St James’s Park regular Judge Stephen Earl does not want to appear biased when Nolan goes to court for speeding. [...]

At an administration hearing for Nolan’s case at North Shields magistrates’ court, Judge Earl said he was “not willing to do the trial” set for just before Christmas. It puts the date in jeopardy as a substitute will be hard to find.

He said: “Since I go and watch, it may seem biased.”

Yes, so when another footballer gets off lighter than an average Joe would, don't go blaming Judge Earl. He's staying out of it.

Interestingly enough, Earl wasn't too worried about his status as a Newcastle fan when he tried former Magpie Obafemi Martins or took on Paul Gascoigne's current drunk-driving case. So I guess we can safely assume that it's a Nolan shirt that Earl wears when he goes to St. James' Park. You know, if he wears a shirt at all.
