STARKVILLE, Miss. - There are two schools of thought when a football player fumbles the ball away during a crucial moment of the game. One theory is to banish the player, no matter how hot he has been, because fumbles beget more fumbles. The other theory was clearly in place Saturday night at a raucous Davis Wade Stadium - in the person of Arkansas' Knile Davis.
Having coughed up the football with less than two minutes to go, the 13th-ranked Razorbacks didn't cast Davis aside as it went looking for points in overtime. Instead, their hottest hand got the ball again in a crucial moment - as Davis caught a swing pass for a seven-yard touchdown that was the difference in a 38-31, double-overtime thriller against No. 22 Mississippi State.
In just two weeks, Davis has gone from a sophomore with an interesting first name to perhaps the hottest running back in the SEC. Having gashed UTEP for 182 yards on just 11 carries last week, Davis stepped it up Saturday night - rumbling for a career-high 187 yards on 31 carries and accounting for three touchdowns.
Arkansas (9-2, 5-2) got 305 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Ryan Mallett, and 105 receiving yards from Jarius Wright.
The Arkansas victory spoiled an impressive performance from Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf, who passed for 224 yards and rushed for 103 more. Vick Ballard rushed 33 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
