As the U.S. national team prepares for its final match of 2010 against South Africa in Cape Town, U.S. Soccer announced the opening game of 2011 -- a Jan. 22 showdown with Chile in Southern California. The game will anchor the traditional January camp that coach Bob Bradley conducts at the Home Depot Center outside Los Angeles. The players he calls in for the camp tend to play for either MLS teams or clubs in Scandinavia that compete on a similar calendar.
Players based in Europe (especially those who get playing time) and those who may spend the winter out on loan (like Landon Donovan did last January), won't play a part.
