Dirk Nowitzki, Russell Westbrook and Andre Iguodala Injured on Monday

It's never fun to write about an injured first rounder, but that's the case here with Dirk Nowitzki who injured his knee on Monday night after playing just 11 minutes against the Thunder. He did not return to the game and already there is some uncertainty as to how severe the injury actually is. We'll have to continue to monitor his status.

If Nowitzki does miss time I guess all you can do is look to add Shawn Marion. After his 20-point, 9-rebound performance on Monday that might not look so bad. But let me be the first to remind you that Marion is not Dirk.

The other big injury on Monday night was to Russell Westbrook, who left late in the fourth quarter after injuring his right shoulder. He too did not return and as with Nowitzki it's too early to tell how severe this injury is. But, as is my duty I suggest you look to add Eric Maynor if Westbrook misses time. Let's hope it doesn't come down to that.

Martina Navratilova's Climb of Kilimanjaro: Day 2

Martina NavratilovaMartina Navratilova is leading a group of 27 fundraisers to the summit of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a charity helping the lives over one million disadvantaged youngsters worldwide through sports-based projects.

Latest update from Martina as the team makes their way towards the summit via the Rongai Route: Click here for Day One.

DAY TWO: Tuesday, December 7, 2010
Kikelewa Caves (3,600 metres)

Hi All,

Day two of the Mount Kilimanjaro climb, and the team and I are enjoying a well-deserved rest at camp after an intense day of trekking.

We were woken this morning at 6.30 am for breakfast, before departing camp at 8 am. Today's route was quite steep from the outset, but as we crossed the heather moorland, we had the chance to take in breathtaking views of the summit, and with it the realisation of how far we have got to climb!

We can also see that there is LOADS of snow on the summit. We were warned about this, but now we can see the reality. It means it's going to be very, very cold at the top.

After a break for lunch, the walk became increasingly difficult, as we trekked towards the jagged peaks of Mawezi, Kilimanjaro's second peak. We were warned that we may start feeling the effects of altitude at this point, as we climb beyond 3,000 metres. The porters are right, most of us are beginning to get out of breath and finding the walking more difficult.

The porters are keeping us going by singing lots. We're trying to pick up the words to join in, but we don't have the lung capacity that they do. They are used to the altitude.

Paralympic cyclist Michael Teuber is amazing, he keeps walking past me at a great pace, and he doesn't stop smiling.

After what feels like a long afternoon of walking, eventually the tents at Kikewela caves are spotted in the distance, a relief for all of us after a hard day of trekking!

If Tiger contends in it, the viewers will come

Say what you want about Tiger Woods; anything you want. He's a cheater. He's a scumbag. He's a bad guy. He's a bad tipper. Dog the man for days and days, but you will never take this fact away: When Tiger is in contention at golf tournaments, viewers will swarm.

On Sunday alone, people from all sports were switching over to NBC to catch the drama that was the Chevron World Challenge, and the difference was shown in the ratings.

The 2.7 overnight rating for the Chevron was up 170 percent from last year and the highest since 2002, when Tiger was also in the hunt, eventually losing to Padraig Harrington.

How crazy is a 2.7 for an event that isn't even recognized by the PGA Tour? It's higher than the final round of the British Open this year, which drew a 2.6 (but, for full disclosure, this year's British was the lowest ratings ever).

Still, the formula for success with networks showing golf is still the same as 1996, when Woods began with the "Hello World" ad. Tiger + contention = money.

4th & 26: For Chargers' Kelley Washington, Future is Now

4th and 26
is here to throw you a couple of deep sleepers, guys available in a large majority of Fleaflicker leagues that could give your fantasy football team a big boost.

Kelley Washington, WR, Chargers (0% owned)
Remember when Kelley Washington was supposed to be "The Future"? Well, that future could be now. The journeyman receiver should see plenty of field time (if activated) in Week 16 with Antonio Gates, Malcom Floyd, and Patrick Crayton sidelined, and we all know as long as Phil Rivers is slinging the orb, all backup Chargers receivers make decent fill-ins (see some of Seyi Arijotutu and Crayton's performances earlier this season).

New Daytona Will Have Tighter Action, More Chance for Mayhem, Drivers Say

As defending Daytona 500 champion Jamie McMurray made his first laps on the repaved Daytona International Speedway Wednesday, the newness of it all was mildly overwhelming at first.

"Honestly, from my first 15-lap run in the draft, it took awhile to take it all in and kinda understand what was happening," McMurray said of the first of two days of Goodyear tire tests on the 2.5-mile speedway's new pavement. "When we unloaded, the cars seemed really wide and the track seemed narrow. But, really, after running 20 or 30 laps, it was not scary and was not that big of a deal.

"Today (Thursday), when I got out there, it felt way more comfortable and you kinda learn little tricks and stuff."

What they also learned, McMurray and other drivers said Thursday at a press conference at the speedway, is that because the new surface is so smooth and fast and so much easier to drive, big packs of cars will stay together longer, and that means the chances of big crashes are greater.

"It's gonna be different racing than what we've had in the past," McMurray said. "The cars are going to stay bunched up more. When you're really close together, it increases those chances" of a big crash, McMurray said. "You just gotta hope that you can make it to the end, because the odds [of a crash] are going to be really good, I'd say."

Barring a huge mistake or problem, "you're not going to the lose the draft," said Jeff Burton. "It's going to be big packs all the time. Three-wide is work. Four-wide is a wreck. Because of the mentality of superspeedway racing. there's going to be efforts to go four-wide to pick up positions, and when that starts happening, it's going to be get hairy."

Graeme McDowell Dashes Tiger Woods' Comeback Attempt at Chevron Challenge

Filed under:

Graeme McDowellTHOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- There was golf history made Sunday at Sherwood Country Club -- but it didn't include a fairy tale ending for Tiger Woods.

In a dramatic, back-and-forth final round, Graeme McDowell came back from four strokes down to overtake Woods and win the $5 million Chevron World Challenge, sinking two consecutive long birdie putts at the 18th hole - one in regulation, and another in a sudden death playoff . McDowell's Sunday surge marked the first time Woods had failed to win an event that he had led by three strokes going into the final round.

It was, in a way, a fittingly disappointing conclusion to a forgettable 2010 for the world's most famous golfer, whose personal life was turned upside down a year ago after revelations about his extra-marital affairs. Woods, who turns 35 later this month, has not won a tournament in 378 days, by far the longest winless streak of his professional career -- and likely the longest such drought of his life.

Despite the near-miss and his inability to hold a lead, Woods showed few signs of disappointment after the round. "It was a great week even though I didn't win," he said. "It said a lot for me to come back and put my swing back together again. I'm just really excited about this offseason, and I haven't been that way in a while."

For McDowell, the Northern Ireland native and 2010 U.S. Open champion, it was yet another memorable moment in a fantastic season that's seen him climb to No. 7 from No. 39 on the World Golf Rankings.

Liverpool fans leave banners asking for Rafa's return at his house

I'm 65 percent sure these banners were definitely left by Liverpool fans and not Rafa himself.

While Rafa Benitez's agent has revealed that they are working to rescind his contract with Inter, Liverpool fans have left banners outside the Merseyside home of their club's former manager expressing a desire to have him back.

Rafa has been blamed numerous times for the problems that continue to weigh Liverpool down to the middle of the Premier League table under new manager Roy Hodgson. But the uneasy transition to the new regime has old Rafa suddenly looking not so bad.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has already put Rafa's name in for a managerial opening at a McDonald's in Beijing.

Fantasy Stream Team: Blackburn Hot

Filed under:

The Stream Team put its trust in Rick Porcello for the first time on Monday, and the Tigers pitcher snapped his string of good starts, allowing five runs on 12 hits in 5.1 inning. The dozen hits tied a Stream Team worst for the season, with the other hit fest coming in our third streaming start of the season from Brett Myers, who would go on to have an excellent year. Let's see if we can finish strong as well. Jake Westbrook gets the start on Tuesday.

Nick Blackburn has been on fire over the last month, pitching at least seven innings in each of his last five starts while allowing no more than three runs in an outing and a total of eight runs overall (nine, if you count an appearance in an extra-inning game). On September 11, Blackburn threw eight shutout innings against the Indians in Cleveland. On Wednesday, he'll get to face the team on his home turf.

Alert! Adrian Peterson inactive, Favre to start on Monday night

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_fantasy_experts__41/ept_sports_fantasy_experts-587585580-1292891693.jpg?ymtoYREDPUPZj53B

Brett Favre (shoulder) will reportedly draw the start for Minnesota on Monday night, and Adrian Peterson (ankle, thigh, terrible field) is inactive.

Repeat: Peterson is INACTIVE.

Take evasive action, quickly. Toby Gerhart is your Vikings RB for a night. If he's owned, then Chester Taylor is probably available on the Chicago side. But do something, if possible, and do it soon. And if you were starting Joe Webb at receiver, forget it. Sub Earl Bennett if you can. Or Bernard Berrian. Or Devin Aromashodu. Someone. Anyone.

The current weather conditions at TCF Bank Stadium are pictured above. Looks wintry, cold, delightful. A perfect night for a live blog, actually. Please join us.

But first, send Webb and/or Peterson to the bench. Hurry. Do it.

---

Update, 9:40 pm ET: Webb fetishists, you caught a break. Favre suffered a head injury on a second quarter hit, doubtful to return. WEBB LIVES.

Talking Horses: Latest news and best bets in our daily racing blog

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog as Mikael D'Haguenet returns to the track at Leopardstown

5.45pm Quinlan pulls off Lingfield coup

Chris Cook: Mick Quinlan had a double at Lingfield today, thanks to two well-backed horses whose recent form was woeful. M'colleague Will Hayler has been looking into the matter and will have a wee story in tomorrow's paper.

3.55 Woe, woe and thrice woe. Organisateur leaves it too late

Chris Cook: Taunton is a sharp track, where there is an obvious risk that, if you leave your challenge until too late, you may not be able to reel in a front-runner who keeps going. Nick Scholfield could tell you all about that after he got Woolcombe Folly beaten there in April 2008.

Yet Ian Popham settled Organisateur in midfield and was still several lengths behind the well-fancied Dynaste turning for home. Organisateur finished strongly to force a photo-finish with Dynaste and appeared to be in front just a stride after the line, twisting the knife in the wound for anyone who backed him at 8-1.

2.31pm Mullins hopes Mikael was flat after recent race

Greg Wood: Mikael D'Haguenet is the second major fancy from the Willie Mullins yard to lose at long odds-on this week, as he trails home in fifth behind 10-1 chance Realt Dubh in the Bord Na Mona Novice Chase.

The favourite did not jump well, making a bad mistake four out and then another at the second-last, just as he needed to be taking closer order.
"I hope he was just flat after Fairyhouse [earlier this month]," Mullins said. "I wasn't happy from the fifth fence, he just wasn't jumping down the back and lost his rhythm."

Mullins must now sketch out an immediate plan for Mikael D'Haguenet that ideally involves getting him off the mark over fences before considering whether to send him to Cheltenham.

Hills pushed him out to 16-1 (from 7-1) for the RSA Chase in March, while Realt Dubh, who might not have won but for the last-fence fall of Saludos, can be backed at 25-1 for the Arkle Trophy.

2.18pm Mikael's jumping to the right may not be new

Chris Cook: Mikael D'Haguenet won four times at left-handed courses as a hurdler but it may be worth noting the Racing Post's analysis of his win at Navan in December 2008, when he beat Pandorama. "Jumped slightly to the right at most hurdles," it says in the analysis, so perhaps Mikael has long had a preference for right-handed tracks that has become evident under the greater duress of jumping fences.

There was no sign of such a thing on his Irish chasing debut a fortnight ago, but of course that was at right-handed Fairyhouse. Left-handed Leopardstown appears to have exposed his limitations and there must be a fear that Cheltenham would do the same.

2.05pm Mikael stuffed after jumping poorly!

Chris Cook: Mikael D'Haguenet had won the previous six races in which he completed the course but he has been well beaten at Leopardstown just now. He travelled well through the early stages but his jumping was often sketchy and he went to his right at most fences. Paul Townend was easing down on him before the last and he finished a distant fifth.

The race was won by Realt Dubh (10-1) ahead of Noble Prince (5-1) and Torphichen (10-1).

It may have been an expensive couple of days for followers of Mikael's trainer, Willie Mullins, and Townend, as they also suffered defeat with Zaidpour (1-4) yesterday, though they won later with Hurricane Fly.

1.35pm O'Grady may take Sailors to Festival

Greg Wood: Sailors Warn was a very easy winner of the Bord Na Mona Juvenile Hurdle, a Grade Two, comprehensively reversing recent Fairyhouse form with the 6-4 favourite, Toner D'Oudairies, in the process.

Toner D'Oudairies was well below his best, but Sailors Warn could not have done it much more smoothly. "I thought that, if he finished in the first four, we might think about the Fred Winter [Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham in March] for him," Eddie O'Grady, his trainer, said afterwards.

1pm Greg Wood reports from Leopardstown

An early start here in Ireland as Hidden Universe, a Grade One bumper winner at Punchestown last year, makes a successful debut over timber in the maiden hurdle. These races are often worth much closer attention in Ireland than similar events in the UK and, with a purse of 12,000 euros, there should have been a bit of depth to it.

Hidden Universe was never in serious danger, though, having been taken into the lead from an early stage by the leading amateur Robbie McNamara, the younger brother of top professional rider Andrew.

"He jumped big and jumped safe, and I'd imagine that, if there had been a better pace in the race, he'd have jumped even better," said the winning trainer, Demot Weld. "I think a faster pace, where he could have followed something and got a nice lead, would have been better. Nobody wanted to go on, so Robbie did the right thing. He jumped the first like a fence, but he's a very athletic horse and a very good one.

"We'll see how he comes out of the race. He's only a four-year-old rising five and I'm in no hurry with him. We'll pick a winners' race sometime in February and see how he progresses from there.

"He's a very big horse, nearly 17 hands, and he'll have learned a lot from today. He's potentially a horse with a big future, he's a Grade One bumper winner, so you'd expect him to do what he did today.

"We'll have a look at them [Grade One events] as the year goes on, and we'll let him tell us."

Hidden Universe was already prominent in betting for the Supreme Novice Hurdle and was cut to 12-1 (from 14-1) by Hill's.

The main focus of attention here today is the Grade One Bord Na Mona With Nature Novice Chase, in which Mikael D'Hageunet will start at odds-on. He was a faller at the last on his first start over fences a couple of weeks ago, but looked to be going like a winner at the time and his many followers will expect to get their money back today.

Whether Noble Prince (2.00) should be quite so big to beat him is another matter, as he was a useful hurdler who took well to fences at Punchestown in October. At around 6-1 on Betfair, he is a decent bet, while Smoking Aces (2.30) has solid claims too.

Today's best bets, by Chris Cook

The main event today is Leopardstown's Grade One novice chase at 2pm, in which Mikael D'Haguenet is a hot favourite, despite his last-fence fall at Fairyhouse a fortnight ago. The only horse to beat Pandorama when that horse completed the course, he was absent for 19 months with, reportedly, "splint and muscle problems" before his latest run.

Still, it seems he has suffered no loss of ability and he is still only six. A very classy hurdler, he beat Karabak, Diamond Harry, China Rock, Knockara Beau and The Nightingale when winning at the 2009 Festival and he would probably have won at Fairyhouse (his first chase run since leaving France in 2008) but for his tumble. Even then, he seemed to jump the fence as cleanly as he had cleared the rest, only for his legs to give way on landing.

He's 8-11, which seems short enough in view of the various things you could worry about, but I can't make a case for any of the others. It's a race to watch, especially in light of rumours that, if all goes well, Mikael could show up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup rather than a novice race at the Festival. Connections are said to be aware that they may not get many complete seasons from this fragile talent and may opt to take on the big boys while they can.

I'm surprised to see Organisateur (3.30) is not more fancied at Taunton, where he is 8-1 to repeat the easy course and distance success he enjoyed last month. He has, of course, been raised a full stone for that five-length win but Paul Nicholls' charge is a young, in-form horse with a fair capacity for progress and three course wins to his name in 2010.

Dynaste, of course, can hardly be blamed for getting beaten by Aegean Dawn, one of the all-time handicap blots, at Cheltenham but I can see little percentage in taking a short price (11-4) about horses who have been raised 11lb for a defeat and David Pipe's stable cannot match Nicholls' for form at the moment.

Semi Colon (2.25) made her racecourse debut in a Cheltenham bumper in April in which her trainer, Nicky Henderson, has a good record. Well backed, she found the course too testing and didn't get home against decent opposition but hacked up at the much sharper Hereford, albeit in a weaker race, on her second start last month.

Taunton seems the right place for her hurdling debut and 6-4 is a fair assessment of her chances against the frustrating Chilli Rose. Tazzarine is interesting and unexposed but seems completely unfancied on Betfair.

New Book Tackles NASCAR's Greatest Debates

EDITORS NOTE: When you start talking about Richard Petty's rightful place in NASCAR history vs. Dale Earnhardt vs. Jeff Gordon, you're going to get in an argument.

In his first book,
Trading Paint: 101 Great NASCAR Debates, recently published by John Wiley & Sons Inc., motorsports writer Jerry Bonkowski tackles these questions and provides his unique viewpoint. Prior to joining FanHouse over a year ago as an editor, Jerry Bonkowski was National NASCAR Columnist for Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com and wrote for USA Today.

Here are several excerpts from Bonkowski's book, which is available at Barnes & Noble, Borders and other book stores, as well as online at Amazon.com.

WHO'S THE GREATEST NASCAR DRIVER EVER?

This debate always gets passionate fans going, with typically mild-mannered individuals turning into raving, obsessed fanatics if someone dares to challenge the superiority of the guy they so proudly call "their" driver. Think of a 140-pound, Woody Allen-looking dweeb who lives and breathes Kasey Kahne suddenly getting a surge of testosterone, puffing out his chest while forgetting common sense, and stupidly trying to take on a hulking, 300-pound redneck who takes great offense if you say anything bad about Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Then watch the punched-out Woody Allen-esque fan suddenly wind up doing a frightening, almost cartoonlike barrel roll through the air like the great Rusty Wallace did more than a few times during his career at places like Talladega Superspeedway.

Roy Hodgson looking lost and confused

After Liverpool's home loss to Wolves on Wednesday, it seems like manager Roy Hodgson's days might be numbered. His tactics have been baffling and the club's fans have completely lost patience with him.

Over the last few weeks, Hodgson has looked increasingly lost and confused in just about every picture taken of him. Here are some of them.

"Did I remember to take my back pills?"

"That looks like my friend Dave, but I thought he died."

"Both these ladies behind me have beards."

"Why am I wearing a belt?"

"I have no idea who this person is."

"I think this bump on my head is new."

"Hmm I shaved today. How about that?"

Fantasy Stream Team: Choice of Three

Filed under:

Streamer Jhoulys Chacin surrendered seven runs in five innings, but sloppy play led to just two of those runs being earned and counting against Chacin's ERA. Even though the Stream Team caught that break, we still weren't able to pick up a win, meaning we remain stuck on 69 wins for the season. Madison Bumgarner is the next pitcher to shoot for the 70th win, and he may have what it takes to deliver; after all, Bumgarner is the guy that gave us our 69th win in the first place.

Most of our Friday streaming options haven't been pitching well, but we can narrow our choice down to three players. Rick Porcello has recorded wins in five of his last six starts, allowing one walks or less in each. His road ERA is over 6.00, and he heads to Baltimore on Friday.

Fausto Carmona has surrendered two runs or less in each of his last five starts, but he has just one win in his last ten games. A low K:BB rate makes me hesitant to use him on the road against the White Sox, and he has a 7:13 K:BB ratio in U.S. Celluar in his career.

Michelle Wie's back is acting up in Dubai

The Dubai skyline isn't the only thing that's a work in progress in that photo there. Michelle Wie's back is apparently nowhere close to 100 percent, according to an AP report from the course.

Playing in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club, Wie exhibited a slight but noticeable limp. The back injury has caused her problems over the last few weeks, but she anticipates a full recovery in time for the 2011 season.

After two rounds, Wie sat at 1-under, six strokes off Lydia Hall's lead. Other notables include Anna Nordqvist at 6-under, Christina Kim at 3-under and In Kyung Kim at even par.

DTotD: Angry mob attacks match officials on Christmas

A Christmas Thai Premier League playoff match between Nakhon Pathom and Sisaket didn't exactly live up to the spirit of the season when fans beat up and pulled a gun on the match officials. Tempers were riled when the referee started to get card-happy and the breaking point was when a single, shirtless loon stormed the pitch, only to be dealt with by police.

Those same police proved no match for the gang of invaders who followed, though. They stood around like goons while the officials took flying kicks and punches from all sides before finally fleeing the madness.

Of course, the vast majority of Thailand doesn't celebrate Christmas, so the irony of this happening on the holiday is probably something they don't much care about. Still, I doubt Buddha would've been too happy with this, either.

Rating the Beef 'O'Brady's Bowl: Former C-USA rivals just wanna have fun

Bowls: There are a lot of them. As a public service, the Doc is here to rank each game according to five crucial criteria, with help from the patron saint of the game in question. Today: The Beef 'O'Brady's Bowl!

Teams. Louisville Cardinals (6-6) vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles (8-4).
Particulars. Dec. 21 (Today), 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Favorite: Louisville (–2½)
Simon Peter (sometimes called Simon Cephas), first-century Galilean fisherman, disciple of Jesus Christ, likely inspiration for the Gospel of Mark, "Rock" upon which the earliest Christian faith was spread, first pope according to Roman Catholic doctrine, martyr at the hands of the Roman emperor Nero and namesake of the world's largest Christian church. Duh.

Locale. Tropicana Field is a) Primarily a baseball stadium that b) Was once officially known as "The Thunderdome," and c) Is now named for a brand of orange juice. It was also the first major facility to replace AstroTurf with FieldTurf in 2000. But mainly, it's a baseball stadium on the interstate. In unrelated news, here is an historical graph of the population of St. Petersburg, Russia.

Tradition. You may remember tonight's game from such bowls as the 2008 St. Petersburg Bowl, brought to you for the one and only time by something called magicJack, a device designed to allow customers to make phone calls over their computer for fractions of the cost of usual phone service. (And which apparently still exists, despite its failed attempt to prove that it doesn't spy on phone calls for advertising purposes.) The faux-pub chain Beef 'O' Brady's swooped in with its superfluous apostrophe just 10 days before last year's game between Rutgers and Central Florida, rechristening the plain old "St. Petersburg Bowl" into the much classier "St. Petersburg Bowl Presented by Beef 'O'Brady's."{YSP:MORE}

All of the above is code for "ESPN conjured it up out of thin air because crappy bowl games still get better ratings than bull riding or whatever else they'd put on in the same time slot."

Swag. Players will receive a mini-helmet, which is kind of stupid, and sunglasses and backpack by Oakley, which whatever. But they'll also walk away with an Xbox 360 console, which ranks second only to the Capital One Bowl's $420 Best Buy shopping spree in overall value – and unlike the shopping spree, pawn shops at home will still take it.

Sponsors, trophies and other ambiance. Louisville and Southern Miss are on-again, off-again rivals from long before their Conference USA days, but the intensity reached a fever pitch this week when the two sides nearly came to blows during a pregame dance-off:

"Someone said something disrespectful, did a little jawing after the dance contest … it's all good," said Louisville linebacker Dexter Heyman, who was front and center in the fracas?. It's "just a little too close to game time, ya know?"

Southern Miss players had a different perspective.

"They started talking trash about us being in Conference USA, [that] we can't dance… it was stupid. We'll do our talking on the field," uttered one Golden Eagle who refused to be identified. "A friendly dance competition and they take it all serious? It's ridiculous."

A sincere effort to win the Beef 'O'Brady's poolside dance-off, ridiculous? How dare you besmirch the integrity of this hallowed institution, sir? Have you no respect for the competitive spirit? For the hilarity lost by the abrupt cancellation of the fan favorite belly flop contest? How dare you, sir. How dare you.

This year's match-up. The over/under from Vegas is 57½, which appropriately overestimates Louisville's defensive prowess in the offensively challenged Big East while underestimating the ability of any Conference USA defense to melt into a puddle of warm goo at any moment. Six of Southern Miss' last seven games featured at least 60 points between both teams, and the last two – a 59-41 win over Houston and 56-50 loss at Tulsa, respectively – both hit the century mark on the scoreboard, with the offenses combining for well over 1,100 total yards in both games. (And USM still finished second in C-USA in total defense.)

Louisville, on the other hand, finished 71st in scoring offense and only faced one offense that ended the season ranked in the top 40 (Kentucky, in the season opener). But once they get a little warmed up against the Golden Eagles' 103rd-ranked pass defense, the track meet will be on.

Star power. Louisville running back Bilal Powell turned in a breakout, 1,300-yard season on 6.3 yards per carry, despite missing the better part of three games down the stretch to a knee injury. Powell churned out back-to-back 200-yard, two-touchdown games in wins over Memphis and Cincinnati in October, and went over 100 on four other occasions, after producing a single 100-yard game over the first three years of his career.

Final rating: out of five.
Points deducted for the most embarrassing name in the history of embarrassingly named bowl games, and for forcing my alma mater to associate with it. But these teams have already established that They Do Not Like Each Other, and you can't ask for much more than a high-scoring game with a low point spread on a Tuesday night.

Dissenting Opinions: Benn, Hasselbeck and words over Webb

Every Friday during the NFL season we review the Yahoo! weekly position ranks. When an expert breaks from the herd, they're asked to show their work. We try to focus on names near the start/sit line in public leagues, or on acts of complete lunacy. Let's play the feud…

Joe Webb – Behrens WR rank 47, Yahoo! composite rank 35

Conceptually, Webb has a nice dual eligibility situation. I get it. Many of you are excited to have a starting quarterback slotted at wide receiver in the fantasy semifinals. It's a clever plan.

But here's the problem with the plan: In all likelihood, Webb is going to have an awful night.

First of all, his team is a mess. Minnesota will be playing its second straight "home" contest in unfamiliar surroundings, and the offense is coming off a 3-point performance in Week 14. Secondly, Webb is facing an excellent Bears defense, a unit that ranks as the third-best in the NFL in terms of points-allowed (17.5) and eighth in total yardage (313.8). Chicago also ranks in the top-third of the league in fewest fantasy points allowed to opposing QBs — and that's after games against Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo, Michael Vick and Tom Brady. This is a turnover-focused defense (16 INTs, 17 FFum), battling to clinch a division title. Whenever the Bears have gotten their hands on a rookie and/or third-string quarterback this season, they've owned him.

Webb, of course, is a first-year quarterback making his first NFL start. When the Vikings drafted him, the plan was to convert him to receiver. He completed less than 60 percent of his passes in college at UAB and he posted a career TD-to-INT ratio of just 37-to-25 — not exactly dazzling numbers. Here are a few scouting notes from the Rivals pre-draft report on Webb:

He isn't a natural passer and struggles to read coverages. Webb lacks the ability to go through his progressions. He doesn't display a confident throwing motion, has a tendency to short arm throws underneath and fails to keep his feet under him when asked to drive the ball downfield. He has a tendency to fall off on a lot of throws and is squeamish in the face of pressure. … He lacks ideal accuracy and touch on all levels of the field. He has a lazy delivery and will drop his elbow. Webb fails to generate much power from his lower half. He isn't a strong-armed passer and lacks the touch and anticipation skills to fit the ball into tight areas. He fails to diagnose coverages, will force the ball into traffic and isn't safe with the ball.

So that's what you're getting. Webb is a talented runner, sure, but Chicago's defense doesn't lack speed. Remember, the Bears limited Vick to 44 rushing yards, kept him out of the end zone, and sacked him four times. Is Joe Webb somehow a more dangerous ball-carrier than Mike Vick? Seems doubtful. It's also worth noting that game-time temperatures are expected to be in the single-digits on Monday night, and Webb has never played outdoors in temps below 40.

In my opinion, Webb's statistical floor in Week 15 looks a lot like the line delivered by Carolina's quarterbacks versus Chicago in Week 5: 14-for-32, 96 pass yards, 3 INTs. (Plus maybe he rushes for 30 yards and fumbles twice). I don't think his ceiling is much higher than Tyler Thigpen's performance against the Bears in Week 11: 17-for-29, 187 pass yards, INT, 27 rush yards.

Webb is definitely not a lock for double-digit points simply because he's playing quarterback. The Vikings would be wise to minimize his impact on Monday, giving Peterson and Gerhart all the work they can handle. I'd only consider giving Webb a fantasy start out of total desperation, if my team happened to be a clear underdog and my WR alternatives were tragic.

Joe Webb – Funston WR rank 29, Y! composite rank 35

I’ll admit, I know very little about Joe Webb. Sure, I’ve read some scouting reports, and there’s enough warning flags in there that you can understand why he was a sixth-round pick. But, hey, Tom Brady was a sixth-round pick, and I don’t typically let the inexact science of NFL scouting get in the way of logic. And the logic here is that when you get the opportunity to play an NFL starting QB at the WR position in fantasy, you should give it strong consideration, regardless of matchup.

What we know is that Chicago has allowed QBs to score double-digit fantasy points in 12 of 14 games, and that includes Tyler Thigpen and Drew Stanton. In one of the other games, the first meeting with Detroit, Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill combined for 8 fantasy points, and in many weeks 8 points at the wide receiver position is a top 30 tally. So, that leaves us with one game that Chicago has held the QB position to under the point total that you could reasonably expect for a top 30 WR, and that was Jimmy Clausen, who doesn’t have the benefit of Adrian Peterson behind him, the hulking presence of Sidney Rice split wide nor does he pose the threat of breaking loose down field on a 16-yard scramble like Webb does.

In all likelihood, Webb will look awful on Monday. But, even if he throws 2-3 picks, they’re only worth -1 in Yahoo! Default scoring. Point is, Webb can play bad but still look oh so good at the WR spot. Consider this: 140 passing yards, 30 rushing yards, 1 TD pass, 2 INTs. That’s not a good line, but it’s likely to add up to a top 30 WR tally when the Week 15 dust settles.

Matt Hasselbeck – Evans QB rank 10, Y! composite rank 22

During this holiday season, Hasselbeck has been a fantasy angel who’s earned his wings. Kind, generous and thoughtful, the giver has dished out a healthy portion of fantasy points, earning little to no recognition. Over the past five weeks, he’s quietly amassed 299 yards per game and six touchdowns. His resulting 20.0 fantasy points per game ranks No. 12 at his position, ahead of notable names Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan and Eli Manning.

Evident in his eight picks since Week 10, turnovers are a concern. But Seattle’s horrific defense and nonexistent running game virtually guarantees Hassy will sling the ‘skin at least 35 times, a number of attempts he’s met or eclipsed seven times this season. By sheer volume he deserves a ‘reliable’ designation.

It’s no secret Atlanta has struggled grounding the pass. Corners Dunta Robinson and Brett Grimes have played with a great deal of inconsistency. On the year, seven quarterbacks have registered at least 20 points in a game against the pair. Based on the individual matchups, Hasselbeck will have little resistance becoming QB No. 8. Mike Williams and Ben Obomanu are both expected to return. The former has six-inches on Robinson, a size advantage Hassy will undoubtedly exploit. After committing five turnovers last week versus San Fran, the maligned passer will be redeemed.

For worried Aaron Rodgers owners, the ‘Hawks signal caller could be a clutch crutch. A final tally in range of 280 yards with 2-3 TDs is certainly possible, making him a borderline top-10 QB. Sip the Starbucks.

Matt Hasselbeck – Pianow QB rank NR, Y! composite rank 19

I'll openly grant that the Falcons secondary is not a shutdown group. They're allowing 7.2 YPA and a 86.8 rating to opposing QBs, making them a mildly-favorable matchup. But do you really want Hasselbeck deciding your fate in the fantasy semifinals? He's gone for multiple touchdowns just twice in his last 11 starts, and both of those twofers came in blowout losses. Garbage time production is a beautiful thing when it comes, but it's hard to expect it before the game starts. And don't forget the interception tax when factoring in the price of Hasselbeck business - he's been picked off eight times in his last three starts. You can have him, I'll look elsewhere. (Kerry Collins, come on down).

Giants Defense – Pianow D/ST rank NR, Y! composite rank 11

When choosing a fantasy defense, there are three things that you're looking for. One, a potential blowout; two, an inexperienced quarterback; and three, a likely turnover bonanza. The Giants don't apply in any of these cases - they're a modest three-point favorite over the Eagles (Vegas, in other words, expects a close game); Michael Vick is playing the smartest quarterback of his life; and the Eagles have only turned the ball over 15 times through 13 games (fourth-best in the league). You want to pick on a weak matchup at this position, and the Eagles offense is anything but that.

Arrelious Benn – Evans WR rank 30, Y! composite rank 48

Full disclosure: we bleed Orange and Blue. Our garage is adorned with images of Red Grange, Dick Butkus and Jeff George’s grease-tastic mullet. Admittedly, we have an Illinois sports addiction.

Attempting to look at Benn’s situation objectively is difficult. Memories from his three seasons in Champaign resonate fondly. But, putting our loyalties aside, the ascending rookie is a trustworthy WR3 in deep leagues this week. Coming off a season-best 122 yards a week ago at Washington, he’s a waiver acquisition worth plugging in. Outside Suh, the Lions offer little excitement in the ‘D’ department, especially in downfield coverage. The perennial doormat has given up a hefty 7.8 yards per attempt this season.

With Mike Williams drawing plenty of extra attention, Benn should be able to exploit one-on-one matchups with Nathan Vasher. The rookie, an Anquan Boldin-clone, has the size, speed and off-the-line strength to win those battles. Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson, who revealed Tuesday he’s finding new ways to get the youngster more involved, will feed him. This week, 60-80 yards and a long TD reception are possible.

Arrelious Benn – Pianow WR rank NR, Y! composite rank 48

He had a nifty little breakout game in DC, corralling four passes for 122 yards. Bully for him. But let's consider Benn's game-by-game reception totals for the prior ten weeks: 1, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3. Volume is not your friend here, folks. Benn is still the third option at best in this Tampa passing game, and the Bucs would prefer to throw 30 passes or less if the game situation allows for it. If you're stuck for a warm body in Week 15 and need to take a desperate stab, okay. But in most standard leagues, you should have much safer alternatives.

Schalke's stadium had another snow-induced cave-in

For the second time this year, Schalke's Veltins-Arena could not withstand the cruel power of heavy snow, resulting in massive holes in the stadium's roof. The good news is that this time the Christmas Eve storm did its damage earlier on in the Bundesliga's winter break.

The bad news is that the damage has forced the cancellation of the World Biathlon Challenge, which was to start on Dec. 30. The other good news is that the pitch had already been replaced with snow for the biathlon...

The other bad news, however, is that there is no awesome video of the collapse like there was when it happened to the Metrodome. Oh, and that the collapse caused about €100,000 worth of damage to the roof and the seats that took the brunt of snow's force.

Breakfast Buffet: Tough Christmas for Seton Hall's Jeremy Hazell

Pull up a chair and sit down at the breakfast buffet, an assortment of all the freshest newsworthy college hoops stories on the net. To make a submission, contact me via email or Twitter.

• Squandering a late five-point lead in a 69-61 loss against Richmond on Sunday was the least of Seton Hall's concerns over the weekend after star guard Jeremy Hazell was shot four times below his right arm when someone tried to rob him on Christmas Day. The good news is the injuries are not considered life-threatening and Hazell is resting comfortably at his home.

• One of the marquee games of the Big East season takes place Monday night when UConn travels to Pittsburgh, an early season test that does not please Huskies coach Jim Calhoun. "The league won't change it because I don't like it," Calhoun told the Hartford Courant. "I just think that when it comes down to teams looking for high seeds in the Big East tournament, obviously then onto the NCAA tournament, I wouldn't want to see a game here two days after Christmas cost somebody."

• Great Q&A from Yahoo! Sports' Jason King with Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight, who compared himself to predecessor John Wall in the interview. "The difference is that I think I can shoot the ball a little bit better than he can," Knight said. "He's so much faster than everyone, he can get to the basket and score anytime he wants. But I know he's working on his jump shot a lot. And with Coach Cal, I'm being forced to work on my speed."

• Who deserves the most credit for Ohio State recruiting Jared Sullinger before the rest of the sport's marquee programs? Maybe his older brother J.J. Before Jared grew into his body, honed his post skills or developed a consistent mid-range game, J.J. told Buckeyes coach Thad Matta, "I don't want to tell you how to do your job, but you need to offer my brother a scholarship."

• The blizzard in the Northeast has already forced the cancellation of at least one major-college basketball game. Fordham originally scheduled a game at Georgia Tech on Monday, but they have mutually agreed not to make it up after the Rams were unable to fly to Atlanta.

• D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, the five-star class of 2012 shooting guard who surprised many by choosing Xavier in October, is now back on the market, a significant blow to coach Chris Mack's recruiting efforts. The 6-3 high school junior says he's definitely still considering the Musketeers, but he'll open up his recruitment to other programs in the Midwest and beyond.

• Of all the candidates to be first-round picks in next year's NBA draft, Minnesota's Rodney Williams may be the one that surprises casual fans the most. Williams is still raw and hasn't consistently produced in two seasons at Minnesota, yet scouts like the athletic wing's combination of length and explosiveness.

• Ever wanted to see this season's team intro video for winless UNC Greensboro? Well, through the powers of YouTube, the guys at Ballin is a Habit are giving you the opportunity. Of course, you can also see videos for a third of the Division I teams in the nation, from tiny Elon College, to bigger names like Georgetown and Kansas.

• Instead of burning a year of Kadeem Jack's eligibility on a team that's unlikely to be competitive in the Big East this season, Rutgers coach Mike Rice will redshirt the freshman big man. Jack had originally planned to spend this year at a prep school, but decided to enroll early at Rutgers in time for spring semester instead.

Pele has six new medals, wears them all at the same time

The Brazilian football federation has decided that the Taca Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa titles won between 1959 and 1970 are equivalent to today's Campeonato Brasileiro titles, which suddenly gives Santos and Palmeiras more titles than Sao Paulo and Flamengo.

So to reflect that rewritten history, the CBF presented Pele with six new medals for those Santos titles he was a part of between 1961 and 1968 because, you know, Pele needs more medals.

Averyhardt, Song highlight graduates at LPGA Q-School

Just seven days ago, the PGA Tour Q-School was wrapping up, and a kid named Joseph Bramlett made news because he joined Tiger Woods as the only two black golfers on the PGA Tour for 2011.

Now, at LPGA Q-School, we have another African-American making waves. Shasta Averyhardt (pictured), just 24, got priority list 16 after her five rounds of Q-School, meaning she will be allowed in some LPGA tournaments and have to earn her way into others, but just getting there is impressive. Averyhardt will be just the fourth African-American woman to play at the top of the sport in 60 years of the LPGA (h/t PGT).

Along with that success story is Aree Song, who is known more for her play as a youngster than that of a recent pro. All that changed when she won Q-School this week, shooting 6-under to take medalist honors by two shots.

Song is a Q-School success story, as one that went from fame to flame out, and is back in the golf picture. At 18, Song finished second at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, but struggled with her play and her health, missing all of 2008 with health issues. After struggling again in '09 and this season (she made just two of five cuts), Song was forced back to Q-School, but a win there will give the new 24-year-old some much needed confidence.

We hear a lot about PGA Tour Q-School, but not much is made of the LPGA event, which is strange, because the difference in money from a LPGA player to someone on the Futures is night and day, and drastic enough to make playing golf an option, not a no-brainer like those getting Nationwide Tour status.

Nicole Hage, who finished 10th at Q-School this weekend, told Devil Ball, "It's the worst week of your life. Mentally and physically draining whether or not you have a job, all (just) depends on a little white ball."

Asked the relief that came with knowing she made it, Hage said, "I balled when I signed my scorecard. All the emotions that I had to hold in all week just came out. I honestly wanted to cry after every round just because it's so much pressure."

The rest of those that made it can be found right here.

Stevie Williams says all's copacetic with Tiger Woods

Throughout the entire TransgressionGate, every single member of Tiger Woods' entourage came under the microscope, interrogated either in person or in absentia with Congressional hearing-like ferocity: What did you know, and when did you know it? One of the key members of Team Tiger is caddy Stevie Williams, and his close proximity to Woods led many to suspect that he knew more than he was letting on. (Yes, like he was covering for Tiger while Woods slipped off into the pines behind Amen Corner for a quickie. Come on.)

Anyway, with all aspects of Woods' life and game in flux last year, the relationship between player and caddy came under scrutiny. Waggle Room caught Williams in a reflective moment after the U.S. Open and speculated that the Kiwi could be looking for work at season's end.

The AP caught up with Williams, who laughed off the idea. "The speculation is incredible, how many people thought I would be fired or that I would retire," he said. "People just make up these stories. Look, I work as a golf caddy. It’s all I’ve ever done. I’m working for arguably one of the greatest players who ever played, who is fully committed to breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record. Why would I quit in midstream?"

While the AP and Williams can have their fun chiding Waggle Room now from a distance of six months, the speculation wasn't so "incredible" when Woods was throwing Williams under the bus for perceived mistakes at Pebble Beach earlier this year. Also, Williams ought to keep in mind that it may not be his decision to "quit in midstream."

Still, to hear him say it, all's right between him and Tiger. While he was frustrated with Woods' ups and downs on the course, he expects that Woods will return to form in 2011, new swing change mastered and new mindset established.

We shall see. No matter what happens, don't go taking unsolicited photos of Williams. He might just trash your camera no matter how well things are going.

Devil Ball 100: The most important people in golf history, 40-31

Welcome to the Devil Ball 100, our ranking of the 100 most important people in the history of golf. Over the next couple weeks, we'll be rolling them out, 10 at a time. Our list includes everyone from golfers to politicians to actors, and each one had a dramatic impact on the game as we know it today. Some names you'll recognize, some you won't. Some positions you'll agree with, and some will have you wondering if we've gone insane. Enjoy the rollout, and see where your favorites made the list!

40. David Leadbetter – One of the leading golf instructors in the world, Leadbetter has built a golf instruction empire that includes a chain of golf academies around the world. Aside from his work with Nick Faldo, he’s also instructed Nick Price, Michelle Wie, Charles Howell III and Ernie Els.

39. Butch Harmon – He will always be known as Tiger Woods’ coach, a role in which he served from 1993 to 2004, but Harmon’s reach as a world-class instructor goes far beyond his relationship with Woods. The son of famed Winged Foot head pro Claude Harmon, Butch has taught a number of top golfers over the years, including Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson and Davis Love III

38. Karsten Solheim – Putters have come a long way thanks to Karsten Solheim. After leaving his post at G.E. in the late 1960’s, Solheim went about designing the first “Anser” putter for his new company, Ping. Julius Boros’ Phoenix Open win in 1967 turned the putter into a must-have for golfers. Ping has since expanded the business to include irons, drivers and wedges.

37. Tony Jacklin – Considered by many to be the most successful British player of his generation, Jacklin won two major championships and eight European Tour titles during his career, but it might be his contributions to the Ryder Cup that people remember most. Jacklin was part of “The Concession” at the 1969 Ryder Cup when Jack Nicklaus conceded Jacklin’s two-foot putt on the 18th hole, thereby ending the event with a tie score. The photo of Nicklaus and Jacklin walking off the course, arms around each other, is an image that’s still flashed across the screen every year before the start of the Ryder Cup. Jacklin also captained the European team to its first victory on American soil in 1987.

36. Bing Crosby – The former singer and actor is credited with making golf popular with the masses. Crosby came up with the idea to host the "Crosby Clambake" back in 1937 as a friendly pro-am that allowed his friends at Lakeside Country Club to play with tour professionals. Now known as the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the event is one of the most popular on the tour schedule – especially if you enjoy watching celebrities hack the ball around Pebble Beach for six-plus hours. Crosby’s event has raised more than $93 million for local charities.

35. Ely Callaway – Founder of the Callaway Golf Company, Ely Callaway’s equipment company has been instrumental in pushing the limits of club technology. After buying Hickory Sticks in 1984 for $400,000, Callaway eventually changed the name of the company to Callaway Golf. Some of his major contributions to the sport include the Big Bertha driver and Callaway forged wedges.

34. Alister MacKenzie – Alister MacKenzie may have been a surgeon by trade, but his best work was done on the golf course where he turned rough terrain into works of art. As a course designer, MacKenzie used his knowledge of military camouflage to build some of golf’s most famous courses. He his credited with co-designing Augusta National with Bobby Jones, as well as designing Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, Pasatiempo and Crystal Downs. MacKenzie was known best for designing courses that flowed with the general topography of the land, as opposed to moving heaven and earth to build a course.

33. Annika Sorenstam – With 93 wins to her name, Annika Sorenstam ranks right up there as one of the most prolific winners in the history of the sport. Besides the victories, Sorenstam also holds the record as the only woman in golf to ever shoot a 59 during a competitive round. She was also the first female golfer since Babe Didrikson Zaharias to play in a PGA event when she teed it up at the 2003 Colonial. Her $22 million in career earnings puts her more than $8 million ahead of her closest competitor.

32. Joseph Dey – Most golf fans have never heard of the name Joseph Dey, and that’s a damn shame. The former executive director of the USGA, known to many as “Mr. Rules of Golf,” was instrumental in bringing sweeping changes to the game. Some of his bigger accomplishments included the expansion of the Rules of Golf, the implementation of gallery ropes, and the decision to turn reachable par-5s at the U.S. Open into diabolical par-4s. During his time as PGA Tour commissioner, he also came up with the idea to add the Players Championship to the schedule. Read as much as you can about this man; he’s an absolute legend.

31. Old Tom Morris – It’s hard to read a book on the history of golf that doesn’t start out with a list of Old Tom Morris’ accomplishments. The four-time Open Champion was one of golf’s greatest players during the 1800’s. By age 20, he was considered to be the second-best player in Scotland.  Aside from being a strong player, Morris was also known as the father of modern greenskeeping. He was the first to introduce the idea of top-dressing greens with sand to promote turf growth. Morris also played a role in the course design process at Carnoustie, Prestwick and the Jubilee Course at St. Andrews, among others.
