Ball State, Kent State Name New Coaches

Pete Lembo Jeremy HazellThe Mid-American Conference lost five coaches this season, more than any other conference, and on Monday two of those positions were filled.

Ball State announced the hiring of Elon coach Pete Lembo and Kent State hired Ohio State wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell (far right).

Both coaches inherit programs that have struggled in the past couple years, but at least Lembo has a team that is not too far removed from success.

In 2008, Ball State went 12-2, was ranked in the national polls and had an outside chance at being a BCS bowl buster. But it lost the Mid-American Conference championship, the GMAC Bowl and ultimately coach Brady Hoke, who left for San Diego State.

The program hired offensive coordinator Stan Parrish and he struggled to keep the Cardinals at a high level. During Parrish's two seasons, the Cardinals were 6-18.

Lembo has a history of rebuilding programs, albeit on the FCS level. He was 35-22 during his five seasons at Elon. Before his arrival, the program had won just 30 games in seven seasons. In 2009, he led Elon to the FCS playoffs for the first time in the history of the program.
