Football League bets to follow this weekend, plus our tipping contest | James Dart

Make your predictions in our ongoing competition, plus take a look at the best betting suggestions in the lower divisions

Welcome to our tipping round-up. Most of you know the drill by now, but for those who don't, every week I will post my betting suggestions for the weekend (which you may well wish to steer well clear of, as well as our predictions contest. The blog can also act as a talkboard for any Football League-related discussions over the weekend.

Portsmouth to beat Millwall at 11-10

It's barely two months since these two last met, when Pompey won 1-0 in south London, and it's hard to argue against an encore performance. In their last 13 games, Portsmouth have collected 26 points out of a possible 39, and two road wins (at top-end opposition Swansea and Norwich) in their last two outings adds to the confidence in them. The Lions, meanwhile, are unbeaten in four, but their last 13 games have only produced 17 points. And with two points separating seventh-placed Reading and Leicester in 16th, the mid-table logjam offers both Pompey and Millwall an opportunity to make a giant leap over the festive period. Expect Steve Cotterill's team to be the one to take advantage. The 9-1 currently available on Portsmouth to win promotion is likely to only head downwards as the season rolls on.

Brentford to beat Yeovil at 7-4

The form away team in the division heads to the out-of-form basement dwellers, aiming for a fourth consecutive road win. Plymouth, Colchester and Southampton have all fallen at home to Brentford, and all rank a fair deal better than the Glovers right now, who are winless in eight, six of them defeats. Two points off fifth, the Bees are finally living up to our pre-season faith and should have plenty in hand at Huish Park on Boxing Day.

Tipping contest

As you'll note from the scoring, late starters have been awarded one point for every week they have missed. The pools panel results from last weekend will apply, though the panel did not adjudicate on Port Vale v Barnet, so all predictions will have to be voided on that postponed game.

The deadline remains 12pm GMT on Boxing Day afternoon, and to ensure six results are achieved amid the continuing cold weather, the pools panel result will stand for those predicted matches that are postponed.
