Paulie Malignaggi has vacated the East Coast for the West Coast, changed promoters, and, made the move into a higher division, the latter, even though he was considered a light-hitting fighter when he competed at the lower weight class.
More power to him.
Literally.
On Saturday night in Quebec, Canada, the former IBF junior welterweight (140 pounds) titlist from New York debuted at welterweight (147 pounds) with a sensational, sixth-round knockout over Michael Lozada, who succumbed behind a barrage of blows.
The 30-year-old Malignaggi rose to 28-4 with only the sixth stoppage of his career, this, in his first bout being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
In defeat, the 27-year-old Lozada slipped to 39-7-1, with 29 KOs, having won his previous three fights, all by knockout.
The stoppage was Malignaggi's first since August of 2002, when he stopped Anthony Simpkins in the second round of his 10th profeessional fight to improve to 10-0, with five knockouts.
Malignaggi, who made his professional debut in July of 2001, began his career at 3-0 after scoring knockouts, respectively, in the first, fourth, and, third rounds.
