From the Philippines, where it was nearly 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 -- the 32nd birthday of eight-division king Manny Pacquiao -- the fighter's adviser, Michael Koncz, told FanHouse not to expect a decision on whom the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion will choose as his May 7 opponent "until the next week or two."
Until a few days ago, it had appeared that Koncz and Pacquiao's promoter, Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, had been favoring the 39-year-old five-time titlist "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 knockouts) to meet Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) in an HBO pay per view televised bout from Las Vegas.
But Koncz recently declared that all "three fighter's proposals" were "all live proposals," refusing to commit any longer to Mosley being a frount-runner over 37-year-old WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) king Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 38 KOs) and 27-year-old WBC welterweight belt-holder Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KOs).
Koncz and Arum said that they would choose one of the the trio of prospects as long as they had not heard from six-time champion Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs), with whom negotiations for a fight with Pacquiao have twice reached an impasse.
But Mayweather has been the recent target of a Dec. 8, outstanding arrest warrant on a misdemeanor battery complaint alleging that he poked a security guard in the face several times, and requiring that Mayweather to turn himself in or face arrest at any time.
